Living in Rohnert Park: Sonoma County's Planned "Friendly City"

Rohnert Park real estate offers some of the most approachable entry points into Sonoma County homeownership, in a planned city about 50 miles north of San Francisco. Known as "The Friendly City," Rohnert Park sits on Highway 101 between Cotati and Santa Rosa, with its own SMART train station and Sonoma State University on its eastern edge.

A City Built by Design

Rohnert Park was planned in the 1950s and incorporated in 1962. Its neighborhoods, called "sections," are lettered, and street names in each section typically start with that letter, so you'll find Adrian Drive and Alma Avenue in the A Section and Burton Avenue in B. Each section was designed around its own park and elementary school, so many homes are a short walk from green space.

Parks, Pools, and Recreation

  • City parks and pools: Neighborhood parks exist in nearly every section, along with sports fields, and three public swimming pools (Honeybee, Benicia, and Magnolia).

  • Crane Creek Regional Park: Oak-studded hiking trails in the hills just east of town.

  • Golf: Foxtail Golf Club, with two 18-hole public courses, the North and the South.

  • Copeland Creek and community trails: Paved paths for walking and cycling that connect neighborhoods to Sonoma State.

Arts, Dining, and Local Life

Sonoma State University's Green Music Center, including Weill Hall, brings world-class classical, jazz, and popular performances to Rohnert Park. SOMO Village, on the former Agilent campus, hosts outdoor festivals, concerts, and community events in the warmer months.

Dining ranges from long-standing local spots to newer restaurants near the university and along Rohnert Park Expressway. Graton Resort & Casino, on the west side of town, is also one of the area's major employers.

Homes for Sale in Rohnert Park

  • 1960s–1980s single-family homes: Ranch and two-story homes in the lettered sections, often on level lots with backyards.

  • Newer developments: Contemporary single-family homes and townhomes in newer areas such as the University District (K Section) and SOMO Village.

  • Condos and townhomes: Often among the more affordable ownership options in the county

  • Manufactured-home communities: Several manufactured-home communities are located in the city.

Commuting from Rohnert Park

The Rohnert Park SMART train station connects north to Santa Rosa and south to Petaluma and Larkspur, with ferry service onward to San Francisco. Driving to San Francisco usually takes about an hour, depending on traffic. Downtown Santa Rosa is about 15 minutes north.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is it like to live in Rohnert Park?

Living in Rohnert Park means planned neighborhoods built around parks, easy Highway 101 and SMART train access, and Sonoma State University's performing arts close by. It's centrally located, with Santa Rosa, Petaluma, and the coast all within reach.

Rohnert Park is consistently one of the more affordable places to buy a home in Sonoma County. Its median sale price often sits meaningfully below the countywide median making it a great entry point in the countywide market. Condos, townhomes, and 1960s–80s single-family homes make up much of the inventory.

Why are Rohnert Park neighborhoods named with letters?

Rohnert Park's original planners divided the city into lettered sections, each with its own park and school, and in most sections the street and park names start with the section's letter. It makes the city easy to navigate once you know the system.
